Twelve years after Radiohead last had a single chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in America, "Nude" cracks the top 40 at 37 on downloads alone.

Radiohead’s new single “Nude” debuts at number 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week.

Taken from their number 1 album In Rainbows, the track also garners the ‘Hot Shot Debut’ ticket for the highest placing of any new single.

While artists have debuted considerably higher, the entrance of “Nude” at 37 marks only the second time the British experimental band has had a single inside the American Top 40.

Radiohead Creep High and Dry Nude

While the popularity of the band continues to mount with each anticipated album, Radiohead release a single about as often as Haley’s Comet lights up the midnight sky.

Their first single to chart, 1993’s “Creep” snuck all the way up to 34, a position “Nude” may overcome as early as next week. In 1996, Radiohead grazed the Hot 100 for the last time with their 78 placing of “High and Dry”.

The sudden appearance of “Nude” on popular download sites, namely iTunes came as bit of a shock. But Radiohead continue to take the industry by surprise following the October 2007 internet-only release of In Rainbows with a price tag of pay what you want.

True to their experimentalist nature, Radiohead not only released “Nude” as an integrated single, but they stripped it down into its individual parts.

Radiohead Strip Nude

Like a prêt-a-porter designer ensemble, iTunes allows fans to download the drum stem, voice stem, bass stem, string FX stem as well as the guitar stem to mix, match and dress up anyway they please.

Remixers who download all five elements gain an access code to GarageBand or Logic music production software to make their own interpretation of one of the most beloved songs the band has recorded to date.

Fans can upload their remixes to Radioheadremix.com until May 1 where the public can listen and vote for their favorite version.

“Jigsaw falling into pieces”, the first single culled from In Rainbows failed to make Billboard’s Hot 100. However, the single managed a low charting in the UK Top 40 music chart in the week of January 14, 2008.

Radiohead Release Greatest Hits, Add Tour Dates

While considered more an album group, Radiohead have often released CDs without promotional singles. The band’s pair of albums Ok Computer and Kid A failed to release any singles yet charted high on album tallies, the latter of which debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 at number 1.

Ironically the band announced to NME that they plan to release a greatest hits album through former label, Parlophone, on June 2.

The planned 29-song, 2-CD collection won’t include any music from In Rainbows but gathers classics such as “Just”, “Paranoid Android”, “Karma Police”, “Creep” and “Fake Plastic Trees”.

Radiohead are currently preparing the second leg of their North American tour to include stops at Lollapalooza on August 1 as well as Montreal, Toronto, Jersey City and Indianapolis. They wrap up the “In Rainbows Tour” at Santa Barbara Bowl on August 28.
