Brighton based quartet Mean Poppa Lean created a stir at summer 2009 events. Formed in 2006 and likened to Red Hot Chili Peppers, they abound in energy and exuberance.
Mean Poppa Lean appear to adhere strongly to the ‘more is more’ philosophy, and who is to say they are not right. They provide a very welcome antidote to the proliferation of bands with a ‘too cool for school’ mentality, who would rather look at their shoes than deliver a high-energy gig. There are no such worries with Mean Poppa Lean, as the band are on a mission to parody every funk cliché known to man. The band don’t shy away from including themselves in the humour. They consist of Christian Barnes, listed as ‘Front Boy Wonder’, Danny Bass ‘Balls out Bassman’, Grills as ‘Hulk Drums’ and lastly, C-Dogg as ‘Prancing Guitar Hero’. The stage-wear must also be seen to be believed, demonstrating that understatement is not part of the band's vocabulary. Audience interaction features strongly in the band’s set list, especially on Hot Times How Hot, and band interaction with drum and guitar solos, singer Christian calling out ‘Give me some bacon! Sausage! Eggs!’. The band also incorporates a horn section duo named the Horny Brassholes who have been known to get a little tetchy if the trombone is mistaken for a saxophone. EP is for EpicMean Poppa Lean’s EP ‘Smash and Grab’ is currently available and includes such tracks as the audience inclusion summer festival hit ‘Hot Times How Hot’. ‘Something, Something’, is an ode to, well, getting some basically, and is a true ear worm also, impossible to get out of your head and with quickly learnable sing-a-long lyrics and catchy bassline. Other tracks include the amusingly titled Regretamin and Sheryl Crow. MPL- Industry Award nomineesNominated for this years festival industry award, 'The Critic’s Choice Award' in the category of Best Performance, Mean Poppa Lean have played at various high profile 2009 events including V Festival and the Isle of Wight. Both are very much on the summer festival map in the UK. The band were also selected to support disco sensation Calvin Harris at Nokia Music’s Skate Almighty gig, also featuring The Pipettes.
