Two Great Under-the-Radar Alternative Rock Albums
The digital age has opened up a lot of opportunities for those playing rock music and particularly alternative rock and indie rock. The digitization of music and increasing numbers of recording and editing software such as Pro-Tools and others has meant that musicians can produce low-cost albums with high sound quality much more easily than even as recently as a decade ago. With physical CD’s disappearing from the marketplace, the landscape is flooding with great new music and many groups are re-releasing albums from previous years and even decades that may not have done well before stores like iTunes, Amazon and Rhapsody existed.
Many recording artists that would have slipped and did slide past the radar of even indie music lovers in prior decades are now becoming very accessible to listeners across the globe. And while the concept of the “Top 20” pop rock music hit is still alive and well, it is losing meaning as groups that are budget-wise small-time and “do it themselves,” but highly innovative, gain power. Small labels that release high-quality musical products are picking up steam and success for artists is measured in different terms.
The following alternative rock albums are solid efforts from artists that may not be at the forefront but are well worth a second listen: Bare Stripped Naked by Bettie Serveert and Daughters and Suns by The Owls.
Bettie Serveert's Bare Stripped Naked
Bettie Serveert is a Dutch indie rock band that formed in 1986 and from Day One was ahead of its time in terms of sound textures and musical sensibilities. Consisting of Carol van Dyk on vocals and guitar, Peter Visser on guitar, Herman Bunskoeke on bass and Berend Dubbe on drums, Bettie Serveert actually split after one gig, only to reform in the early 1990’s.
Bare Stripped Naked released in 2006 is, as the title suggests a stripped-down version of many of Bettie Serveert’s previously-released songs combined with extra recordings from their recent tour. This album features deeply melodic, sweeping musical phrases and emotionally tricky lyrics; it beautifully melds the clarity of folk with some light, sometimes dissonant electronica elements.
Stand-out songs like “Storm" illustrate the complexity of human connections with simple but commanding lyrics like “You feel the need/Feel the motion/Hard on me/And missed emotions/So in other words: how do you deal with all this hurt?/You fail to see hypocrisies.” Others like “Hell = Other People” deliver a rock music message through a juxtaposed simplistic folk guitar and vocal melody: “Hell is other people/To Hell with other people.” But the real surprise of this Bettie Serveert album is a delicately-delivered version of the almost over-covered Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah.” Using only lilting guitars and exploiting Carol Van Dyk’s precise dynamic control, this version puts a lovely bow on an already gifted and inspired collection of songs.
The Owls' Daughters and Suns
Daughters and Suns is the sophomore release of the Minneapolis, Minnesota-based band The Owls. The Owls began as a collaboration between lifelong friends and musicians Brian Tighe, his wife Allison LaBonne and Maria May. All three are responsible for writing songs, lead vocals and taking turns playing all the instruments.
Daughters and Suns continues to celebrate Brian Tighe’s expert guitar playing, songwriting and producing reminiscent of the style of greats like Matthew Sweet. Tighe gained acclaim with his 1990’s alternative rock band The Hang Ups, an outfit that gained recognition by director Kevin Smith and earned a spot on the Chasing Amy soundtrack.
All members of The Owls have been involved in the Minneapolis indie music and rock music scene for over twenty years, and in this band their experience comes together in a collection of often cheery, though sometimes melancholy pop-inspired music with many different layers and textures. The differences in all their voices – from Tighe’s resonant, familiar tenor, to LaBonne’s raspy, rich yet simple alto, to May’s clarified, buttery soprano – make each song shine like a very different gem.
Jaunty, pop-inspired tracks like “Peppermint Patty” and “Isaac Bashevis Singer” combine simple melody with smart lyrics and provide humorous, praising nods to Charles Shultz – a Minnesota native – of Peanuts fame and his characters, or imagined anecdotes of the acclaimed Polish author Singer. Dark alternative rock songs like “The Way On” and “Bury Your Mind” capture a natural conversational, almost colloquial style with lyrics like “More on this later when you fall asleep/And everyone wants to drown” that present depth in a digestible and accessible format. The subject matter of The Owls songs range from relationships and philosophy to world events and provide great punctuation to the ambling guitar and keyboard melodies and harmonies evocative of great 1960’s pop and rock music. Daughters and Suns combines the old with the new and the familiar with the unfamiliar to create an indie music album that is wildly listenable from beginning to end.
The Owls and Bettie Serveert are only two of the many alternative rock bands that may get passed over in an effort to digest the slew of great indie music that is forever seeping out of the woodwork; but they are definitely artists that have survived the many changes in the music industry and thrived.
