Weezer's Blue Album is not only Los Angeles alternative rockers' most memorable album; it is one of the greatest rock records of all time.
Weezer’s debut effort, recorded in 1994, will leave virtually any listener with little to complain about. At just over forty minutes in length, the band’s first self-titled album (commonly referred to as the Blue Album) relentlessly and effortlessly produces one catchy pop song followed by another. Beginning with “My Name is Jonas,” the band rocks hard with catchy riffs and sing-along lyrics. Songwriter and front man Rivers Cuomo plays deliberate and distorted power chords with catchy guitar solo interludes that showcase his talent as a musician. However, this album tends to rely very little on Weezer’s musicianship; instead, it focuses on their proficiency as songwriters. Blue Album Key Tracks“Buddy Holly” is the most accessible track on the record. At two minutes and 39 seconds, listeners will be singing along with Cuomo before the track is finished. Every song on this album is memorable; the only song that struggles to be heard amongst the nine other standout tracks is the ninth track: “Holiday.” The album never lulls, and does not climax until the final track, “Only in Dreams.” At eight minutes in length, “Only in Dreams” is the longest recorded Weezer song ever. This song includes a simple, yet memorable bass line. Eventually “Only in Dreams” gives way to a three minute long crescendo of dueling guitars, explosive drums, and deft bass work. The song finally endswith an epic guitar solo that ends the album with unprecedented style. Blue Album SinglesThe Blue Album boasts three incredibly successful singles which have all peaked on Billboard’s charts in top ten positions. 1994 saw the release of the albums first single “Undone – The Sweater Song” as well as “Buddy Holly,” the albums most successful single on the airwaves. Then, in 1995 the band released the third and final single for “The Blue Album:” “Say It Ain’t So.” Blue Album SuccessThe genius of this album is rarely disputed. It is considered both a critical and a financial success. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, the album has gone triple platinum. It was listed as number 297 on “The Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list in addition to the album’s inclusion on multiple music critics top album lists. According to billboard.com, when it was released, album peaked at the music charts at an impressive number 16. Of the many appeals of Weezer’s debut album, the Blue Album is incredibly accessible. Fourteen years later this album has proven itself timeless and can be enjoyed by youngsters and adults alike; casual listeners, and music aficionados.
